An earthquake of a magnitude of 8.0 hit Sichuan, China on May 12, with its epicenter about 50 miles northwest of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan.

According to the latest news reports, authorities fear that as many as 50,000 people could have lost their lives. We now have post-earthquake imagery from our satellite providers; as of this morning. we have processed the first set of satellite imagery from Formosat2. You can see the image by downloading this KML(http://mw2.google.com/mw-earth-vectordb/china_earthquake/china_earthquake.kml) into Google Earth. We will keep updating the KML as we receive and process more satellite imagery. Save the KML to your "My Places" to see the imagery updates.

The first scenes captured the rescue effort to assess and repair dam damage near Dujiangyan City (北川上游围堰) after the quake.

Special thanks to NSPO, Taiwan's national space agency, for their quick action and providing imagery.

More than 72 hours after the quake rattled central China, rescuers appeared to shift from poring through downed buildings for survivors to the grim duty of searching for bodies - with 10 million directly affected by Monday's temblor.

The official death toll reached at least 19,500 in Sichuan province alone where Monday's quake was centered, vice governor Li Chengyun told a news conference in the provincial capital of Chengdu. The figure was up from nearly 15,000 confirmed dead the day before.

But the State Council, the country's Cabinet, said the number could rise to some 50,000, state TV reported.

We held hands strongly to defeat death, but still lost some of them.
